What is the International Occupational Safety and Health Information Centre (ILO/CIS)?
CIS is the knowledge management arm of the Programme on Safety and Health at Work and the Environment (SafeWork). Its goal is to ensure that workers and everyone concerned with their protection have access to the facts they need to prevent occupational injuries and diseases. CIS continuously monitors world literature on occupational safety and health through its contacts with publishers and with 140 focal points ("CIS Centres") at the national or regional level. Summaries and citations of the most useful publications, as well as products based on the collected information, are disseminated electronically and in print.
The network of CIS Centres contributes to the exchange of information among persons responsible for the establishment and implementation of national policies and programmes.
CIS was founded in 1959 as a joint endeavour of the ILO, the International Social Security Association (ISSA), the European Coal and Steel Community and the occupational safety and health authorities of 11 European countries. The original 11-member network of National Centres has grown to cover 100 countries all over the world.
MOSHA – Macedonian ILO/CIS Collaborative Centre
In 2008, the Macedonian Occupational Safety and Health Association (MOSHA) became the first ILO/CIS Collaborative Centre in Macedonia. Although being a host of the 1st CIS Centre in the country is an honor and privilege, it is also great responsibility towards the OSH community in Macedonia.
Services provided by the ILO/CIS Centre
The ILO/CIS Collaborative Centre within MOSHA as part of the global network of CIS Centres, has two main tasks:
- To collect, analyze, summarize all relevant OSH information from Macedonia and send those to ILO/CIS headquarters
- Disseminate all received information from ILO/CIS to all interested parties and OSH stakeholders in Macedonia
Aside from receiving and disseminating materials and information electronically, MOSHA has an ILO library in its office, containing extensive literature on many aspects of safety and health at work. To make these services closer to the Macedonian public, MOSHA makes efforts to continuously translate into Macedonian languages the most important ILO publications. Additionally, for its members, MOSHA regularly publishes the ILO/CIS information and publications on its website: www.mzzpr.org.mk
